The Leading Resource for Retail Leaders

Retailers from across the U.S. and around the world place a premium on attending High Point Market. For many, it is not just a shopping trip, but a key to their ongoing success. Three of America’s top retailers, Sherry Sheely of Ohio-based Sheely’s Furniture and Appliance, Dorian Stacy Sims of Stacy Furniture & Design in Texas, and Peggy Burns of Boston’s Circle Furniture, tell us how they build their businesses at Market.

“High Point has a HUGE impact on our business,” says Sheely, and she is not alone in her assessment. Sims explains that her team makes the trip from Texas every spring and fall because, “We don’t feel we can afford to miss many Markets or rule any of them out.”

“There’s nowhere else with this amount of area to show product.”

Market Week offers a vast array of showrooms, a wide variety of emerging vendors, and a host of educational and networking opportunities, an expansive experience that provides an efficiency and practicality you can’t find anywhere else. “I don’t know where we’d find product for the store if not at High Point Market,” says Sheely. “You can go to smaller markets, but you won’t see everything.”

Sims also appreciates the extensive showroom space. “High Point is the best opportunity to view a multitude of lines and products to re-merchandise our floors,” says Sims. “I’m able to review existing products and new introductions at the same time.”

“Trends are why I come to High Point.”
– Peggy Burns, owner, Circle Furniture

There are other advantages to shopping the world’s largest home furnishings show. “The visuals are better since the showrooms are so much larger,” says Sims. “More money is dedicated to displays here than at other markets.”

Plus, for Burns, reviewing a multitude of options is essential to finding not just the latest looks, but the trends that are just right for her store “I’m always on the lookout for the next big thing,” says Burns. “I want to make sure we’re on top of the latest styles.”

“You have the opportunity to meet company executives and have eye-to-eye, person-to-person interaction.”
– Sherry Sheely, COO, Sheely’s Furniture and Appliance

Although products top the list of reasons to come to Market, people are a close second. And we’re not just talking about catching up with old friends. Retailers value High Point because of the breadth and caliber of attendees. Everyone you need to see – or wish you knew – is in town.

Sheely finds the ability to build relationships with vendors in person is a key asset to Market. “You’re building trust in case you have issues down the road,” she says. It’s a strategy that’s paid off. “Those relationships have come in handy many, many times.”

For Burns, the relationships she builds in High Point offer both a service advantage and a competitive benefit. “It’s important to meet our vendor partners face-to-face so they have a personal connection with us,” she says. “I want to be sure they give Circle the first choice on any new, innovative products – or at least the right of first refusal.”

“High Point has a more relaxed atmosphere, where we can work closely with company owners, designers and management.”
– Dorian Stacy Sims, president, Stacy Furniture & Design

Beyond direct access to all her vendors, Sims gains an edge by meeting with key players from across the industry. “With High Point we’re able to make appointments and have conversations that can really benefit our business long term,” says Sims.

The ability to connect with peers and gain business advice is also important to Sheely. “We meet retailers that aren’t in our competitive area and ask if they’ve seen any great new products,” says Sheely. “If they have, we can be at that showroom 10 minutes later. We’ve picked up a lot of lines that way.”

After listening to Sims, Sheely and Burns, it’s easy to see why retailers place so much emphasis on attending High Point Market. No other event comes close to delivering the abundant resources and rewarding business experience of High Point. It’s the undisputed leader in home fashion, and the one place where retail leaders know they can always find a way to hone their competitive edge.
